The Ritual Of Family Inspiration

I would like to think that I am relatively good at navigating relationships. At least those that I am not obligated to by blood. Just when you think you can’t stand the prearranged relationships that bind you to your name, someone comes along with a change of heart that forces your own growth.

My brother thought he was cool when he bought his Polaris ATV. My father thought he was even cooler with his portable GPS. Together they would disappear for hours during our family gatherings leaving their little women behind to make sure there was a meal for them upon their return.

My brother has always relished his role as the only man in my father’s life. He designs tattoo ideas that depict horrible images of women in their most vulnerable and goes about his life in a bubble all his own. While I am busy saving whales and trying to right the wrongs of the universe with the power of the written word, he is off scouting some new way to ostracize the female race.

It’s not that I wanted to play their manly games and go running off into the woods for an adventure. I just wanted it to be an option. It would have been an option I never would have taken, but with my own sense of accomplishment I didn’t like being barred based solely on gender. It infuriated me that they were both the way they were.

Family has a way of knocking you off balance. Just when you know you want to scream and refuse to participate in the family based on righteous grounds, someone throws a curve ball. And you either have to catch it, duck really fast, or get hit with it. I am still not sure which one I did. My brother showed up to the next monthly dinner with what was honestly a woman too beautiful and smart for him.

My mother and I weren’t sure how he managed to get her but she was wicked smart, funny, and fit into the female end of the family just perfectly. She had goals and gumption.

Later, I received one of the most impressive apologies I have ever heard rehearsed in my life. It was as though my brother wrote it out and memorized it, but he meant every word. During his apology I realized that he was not the only one in the wrong. I had forgotten the most valuable lesson of all. I had forgotten that people have the right to be and grow without being judged harshly, even when we disagree with their choices. People have the ability to make good in their lives even when our opinions don’t match up.
